Sharing Cities at Design Week 2017 in Milan


On 3 April, in the inspiring context of Milan Design Week 2017, the city’s Deputy Mayor, Cristina Tajani, inaugurated an exhibition dedicated to the Sharing Cities project in the ’New materials for a smart city’ section of Materials Village 2017. The speakers at the opening event included:

Several Sharing Cities partners displayed the first results of their joint project, and the event also saw the launch of the local Sharing Cities website, available at (in Italian).
The week-long Materials Village 2017 exhibition attracted over 40,000 visitors between 4 and 9 April. Milan’s Mayor Giuseppe Sala and Deputy Mayor Roberta Cocco also visited the exhibition, which was dedicated to materials, new technologies, and sustainability.


On the margins of this exhibition, Italy organised its first workshop on the Open and Agile Smart Cities (OASC) initiative on 4 April. The event gathered representatives from Milan, Lecce, Palermo, Messina, Ancona, Genova, Brescia, Pescara, Benevento, L’Aquila, Novara, Pisa, Varese, Cagliari, Terni, and the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI). The workshop was addressed by:

Participants exchanged views on digital and urban innovation at national and international level. They highlighted the important role played by the European Service Platform in opening up new avenues for public sector innovation. CEFRIEL presented its Urban Sharing Platform reference model based on the E015 digital ecosystem initiative developed by the Sharing Cities partners. Also presented was SynchroniCity, a project in which two departments of Milan Municipality cooperate based on the Sharing Cities project’s urban platform.
At the end of the event, Milan Municipality was elected task force country representative. In this new capacity, Milan will foster networking and scaling-up activities among cities.
